Larry Stahl, an outfielder who played 10 Major League Baseball seasons, including two with the New York Mets, died on March 17 at age 84.

Starr played for the Kansas City A’s (1964-66), Mets (1967-68), San Diego Padres (1969-72) and Cincinnati Reds (1973). He made his only career playoff appearance in his final season with the Reds and had his final career hit in the final inning of the 1973 National League Championship Series.

Starr has played all three outfield positions and first base during his career. He retired with a .232/.292/.351 slash line, 36 homers and 163 RBIs in 730 career games.
Starr is perhaps best known for a single swing that resulted in a historic walk.
On September 2, 1972, Chicago Cubs pitcher Milt Pappas was one out away from a perfect game when Stahl walked the bases with two outs in the ninth inning. According to umpire Bruce Froemming, he checked his swing on 3rd and 2, a call that Pappas later disputed.
Pappas retired the next batter, beating the Padres and setting up a no-hitter. But Starr’s fortuitous walk would haunt pitchers for years to come.

After retiring as a player, Starr went to work for the Peabody Coal Company before retiring to his home state of Illinois.
