Ernie Anastos, iconic New York anchor who spent 11 years at WABC-TV, dies at 82

Former Eyewitness News anchor Ernie Anastos dies at age 82.

Anastos anchored Eyewitness News for 11 years starting in 1978 and leaving in 1989.

During his career, Anastos also served as anchor at WCBS, WWOR and WNYW.

He has won more than 30 Emmy Awards and nominations, and received the prestigious Lifetime Emmy Award.

Anastos has covered major events over the years, including the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the coronavirus pandemic.

Anastos recently appeared in a WABC documentary about the death of John Lennon.

Before starting his career, Anastos graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He also holds honorary doctorates from Marist College, New York Institute of Technology, Manhattanville College, Curry College and Sacred Heart University.
