What’s the secret to great NFL defenses in this era? Own a Premium Nickel – The Athletic
In today’s game, there’s one key to taking NFL defenses to the next level: getting quality corners. The best defenses in the league don’t just have great nickel players, they also have players who make plays at a position once reserved for the third corner that isn’t good enough to play on the outside. Take this year’s playoff teams: Nick Emmanwory of the Seattle Seahawks, Jalen Pitre of the Houston Texans, Quentin Lake of the Los Angeles Rams, Delvin James of the Los Angeles Chargers and Cooper DeJean of the Philadelphia Eagles are all standout nickels. DeJean has been the glue for an Eagles defense that saw a lot of talent drain from its Super Bowl-winning team. […] “The nickelback has become a premium position now, a defense-defining position,” Eagles safeties coach Joe Kasper told The Athletic. “So having that length and strength is a big advantage, you know, being able to change routes and break up route releases. When you talk about being able to play true single-high coverage, the foot speed to be able to match the route. And then you have the vision to be able to recognize route concepts.” The ability to process information quickly in short yards is also critical. Whether they’re playing in the box or one to three yards away from three receivers, they have to see and read their keys immediately.
Cooper Dejean looks ahead to 2026 and his ideal role in Vic Fangio’s defense – NBCSP
It might be tempting for Vic Fangio to make DeJean a full-time outside cornerback and move the next best player into the position, but DeJean said he wants to remain at the position. “I love playing in it,” he said. “I like to play inside and be involved in the run game and I feel like I have the ability to do that at that position. Obviously, it’s not up to me, but that’s what I want to do.”
Eagles offensive coordinator search update: Is Brian Daboll still in the mix? – BGN
Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that Daboll is expected to become the Tennessee Titans’ new offensive coordinator if he doesn’t get the head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills. However, the latest news from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler suggests that Daboll’s move to Philadelphia has not been ruled out: “I’m not entirely convinced that former Giants head coach Brian Daboll has left the table, although there aren’t many rumors about it at the moment.” There’s an article in the Music City Miracle right now titled: “How long will the Titans have to wait for Brian Daboll to make a decision?” It’s a fair question. The longer Daboll makes them wait, the greater the chance the Titans will miss out on their top backup option at offensive coordinator. Maybe the Titans got impatient and walked away with someone else, but Daboll didn’t get the Bills job so he could serve the Eagles?

Mailbag: Thoughts on the Eagles coaching search and their current coach – PhillyVoice
Question from @Bula412: How hot are Nick Sirianni’s seats? I’d say it’s warm. Jeff McLane of the Inquirer reported that Sirianni was close to being fired after the 2023 season (which we all already knew), and he was also close to being fired during the bye week of the 2024 season. Therefore, Jeffrey Lurie did not fully believe Sirianni. I think there’s a strong argument to be made that Sirianni squandered a stellar defensive season, and if that happens again, Lurie may feel Sirianni squandered the Eagles’ chance to become an NFL dynasty.
Coaching Update – Eagles Blitz
Jim Bob Cooter felt like he deserved more attention. He has worked with Shane Steichen for the past three years. He served as the Lions’ offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2018. He served as a consultant for the Eagles in 2021, so he already knows the staff and some of the players. The key for me is finding someone who is both a creative thinker and a problem solver. Kevin Patullo does a great job calling the shots in the red zone. He showed some creativity there. He couldn’t figure it out all year. OL is such a mess. Once you know that you adjust. Pattullo was never able to do that. All candidates should be rigorously tested on how they respond to obstacles (injuries, performance issues, etc.).

Man who stole Eagles’ AJ Brown’s car accepts plea deal. How long will he stay in jail? – NJ.com
A New Jersey man who stole a luxury car from Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown’s home and drove it to Camden will spend five years in prison. Luis Segurra, 26, of Camden, pleaded guilty Friday in Camden County Superior Court to third-degree receiving a stolen vehicle, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth-degree resisting arrest.

Atlanta Falcons 2026 head coaching and general manager search: Tracking candidates, reports and rumors – The Fanol
Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Joe Douglas. Status: Interviewed on 1/23. This is the first candidate I don’t like. We have to acknowledge the dysfunction of the Jets and the hands-on ownership, but Douglas consistently missed out on his draft picks after the first round during his time in New York and failed to build a winning team from start to finish. The fact that the Hawks want Douglas back is a testament to his intelligence, but his record isn’t particularly impressive.
Sean Payton hopes to join shortlist of coaches making it to Super Bowl with different teams – ESPN
Andy Reid. Perhaps the best example of a modern coach finding strength in his second destination, Reid spent 14 successful seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, including eight regular-season double-digit wins, but came up short in his lone Super Bowl trip. After retiring with the Eagles, Reid headed west to take over the Kansas City Chiefs — a decision that proved to be a wise one. Reid had the Chiefs roaring, culminating in a breakout season in 2019 that won the first Super Bowl of his long coaching career … and two more Super Bowls in the five seasons since.
3 Reasons to Love the Cowboys Hiring Christian Parker as Defensive Coordinator – Blogging The Boys
The Dallas Cowboys’ extensive search for a new defensive coordinator has ended, with news Thursday afternoon that Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Christian Parker is the man to take the job. Two years removed from seeing their former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore win a Super Bowl within the division for the Eagles, and two years after defensive coordinator Dan Quinn left the Washington Commanders and led them to the NFC Championship Game in his first year as head coach, the Cowboys decided to give the NFC East a try. After the disaster that was Matt Eberflus in 2025, they got rid of their biggest rival and charted a new direction on defense. The Cowboys did this after the Eagles won the NFC East title in back-to-back seasons, breaking a streak of more than two decades in which no team had repeated as division champions. Dallas will be determined to put its name atop the division in 2026 to start a new and different winning streak, and a move that could weaken the Eagles’ coaching staff to easily address the Cowboys’ biggest weakness is a good starting point right now. There are a lot of reasons for the Cowboys to really like this move, and there’s a lot to know about the Cowboys having no choice but to make another scheme change given last season’s defensive results. Let’s take a closer look at some of these reasons.
The more I learn about the Commanders’ recently promoted offensive coaches, the more excited I get – Hogs Haven
It turns out Commander fans have gotten what many of us have been asking for in recent years – the team decided that instead of letting one or more of its bright young coaches leave for promotions, it would reward those bright sparks with promotions and keep them in Washington. We don’t have to look at Braff or Stapleton and think about what might have happened like LeFleur or McDaniel; they stayed in Washington rather than being hired by another team. At this point, I think the exciting (and nerve-wracking) part of Braff’s hiring will be seeing how he performs as offensive coordinator over the next nine to 12 months. He could be a lump of coal in a sock or the next Sean McVay. It will be interesting (or incredibly frustrating) to find out what it is. Personally, I’m optimistic about the prospects for a new offensive coordinator.

4 candidates appear to be the focus of New York Giants defensive coordinator search – Big Blue View
Dennard Wilson. Wilson, 43, is familiar to both Harbaugh and the Giants. Wilson served as Harbaugh’s defensive backs coach in Baltimore in 2023 before becoming the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Wilson also interviewed for the 2024 Giants job but ultimately chose the Tennessee job. Wilson’s defense didn’t rank highly in Tennessee, but with the Titans winning just six games in two seasons, Wilson didn’t have much to improve on. Wilson’s backer is Tennessee star guard Jeffrey Simmons. On Friday, Wilson interviewed for the Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive coordinator vacancy under Jim Harbaugh.
Chargers interview Dennard Wilson for vacancy in D.C. – Bolts From The Blue
Prior to coming to Baltimore, Wilson spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he served as defensive backs coach (2021-2022) and held passing game coordinator duties (2022).
Rams vs. Seahawks NFC Championship game in theaters, Super Bowl spots online – SB Nation
Occasionally, stars give us something truly special in the playoffs. The NFC Championship is that kind of game. On Sunday, the Rams and Seahawks will complete the NFC West trilogy with a rubber game to determine who is better between these two powerhouses. This is a game that will likely be better than the Super Bowl itself, as these teams have already given us two classics in the 2025 season. What makes the NFC Championship Game so special is not just the fact that these teams are playing each other for the third time, but the way these teams play against each other takes the game to a whole new level. The first meeting was decided by two points, the second was decided by one point in overtime to decide the balance of the regular season between the two teams, and to span two games is absolutely unheard of. Now we dig into these two games to see what makes them different and decide if we can learn anything about the NFC Championship by looking at the history of these teams during the regular season.
