Family members claim Trump is prohibited by “federal law” from renaming the center, yet staff have added his name to JFK’s on the historic memorial
As the Kennedy family mourns the untimely death of Tatiana Schlossberg, daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy, Donald Trump has shared social media posts mocking the famous family.
Tatiana, the middle child of Caroline Kennedy and husband Edwin Schlossberg, died on Tuesday, December 30, at the age of 35, just a month after she publicly announced that she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
The Kennedy Library Foundation’s social media accounts shared the news on behalf of Tatiana’s family, which includes her husband, Dr. George Moran, and their young children, Edwin and Josephine.
“Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts,” the post read, signed by “George, Edwin, Josephine Moran, Ed, Caroline, Jack, Rose and Rory.”
Trump did not directly mention Tatiana’s death in his social media deluge following her death. Instead, he shared screenshots of “MAGA” supporters mocking the famous political family’s recent reaction to his decision to add his name to the Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center is a historic performance venue in Washington, D.C., dedicated as a memorial to John F. Kennedy following his assassination in Dallas, Texas, in 1963.
“By the way, the Kennedy family has long neglected the Kennedy Center,” one person claimed. “They don’t raise money for it. They never show up. The only Kennedys who have been there recently are members of Trump’s cabinet.”
Another wrote: “The Trump family have always been supporters of the arts. The Kennedy family are supporters of the Kennedy family.”

Staff members add Donald Trump’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on December 18, 2025
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Thursday, December 18, that the historic venue’s Board of Trustees had “voted unanimously” to rename the building the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” The next day, staff added “Donald Trump and” above the previous text, which read “John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”
However, controversy soon arose among Kennedy Center board members and the family itself. Jack Schlossberg, Tatiana’s brother, wrote on
Jack’s statement echoes comments made by Rep. Joyce Beatty of Ohio, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees. After the vote, Beatty complained to X that she and other vote opponents remained silent on the call and were not allowed to vote to express their dissent.
“For the record. This was not unanimous. I was muted on the phone and not allowed to speak or express my disapproval of this move,” Beatty, 75, wrote. “Also for the record, this was not on the agenda. This was not consensus. This was censorship.”
She continued in her video message, “Obviously, Congress has a say in this. This center, the Kennedy Center, was created by Congress. I think we have to know that this is just another attempt to evade the law and not give the people a voice.”
Other Kennedys also dealt with the matter from a legal perspective. “The Kennedy Center is a living monument to a fallen president and is named for President Kennedy in accordance with federal law,” wrote Joe Kennedy III, grandson of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. “It cannot be renamed, any more than someone can rename the Lincoln Memorial, no matter what anyone says.”

The Kennedy family has yet to respond to Trump’s latest attack. In the hours after Tatiana’s death, the only family members to express love in social media posts were those who shared their love, like Caroline’s cousin Maria Shriver, who was directly mocked in some of Trump’s screenshots.
“I return to this space today to honor my dear, beloved Tatiana, who left this world today,” Shriver wrote on
“I can’t fathom this. I can’t fathom it at all. None. Zero,” she continued. “My heart has been with my cousin Caroline since we were little kids. Now my whole life is with her. She is truly a rock.”
“Those of us who remain will make sure that Eddie and Josie know what a beautiful, courageous spirit their mother was and will be. She inherited the legacy of her extraordinary mother, Caroline. May we all embrace Tatiana’s family not just today, but in the days to come, and may each of you reading this know how lucky you are to be alive right now. Please stop and respect your life. It truly is a gift.”
