Johnson, Pino under pressure
Crystal Palace paid big bucks for Jeremiah Pino ($35 million) and Brennan Johnson ($47.1 million) and they are under pressure to add a raft of goals and assists in the coming weeks and months. Johnson missed a great chance to give Palace the lead in the first half, while Pino saw Bizot’s shot tamely shot in the second half. The Spaniard has scored just once and provided one assist in the league this season after joining from Villarreal. Palace have used the money they received from Eberechi Eze to fund the arrivals of Pino and Johnson and if they are to remain in contention for European qualification they will have to deliver on the goals that Oliver Glasner’s side have been lacking this season (just 22 goals in 21 games).
What to do next?
Crystal Palace will face Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup on Saturday before traveling to Sunderland in the Premier League on Saturday 17 January. Villa face Tottenham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday before hosting Everton on Sunday 18 January.

Why didn’t Palace score a goal? ?
Palace had a huge chance when a cross was clipped in and Bizot caused chaos. The ball dropped, Mitchell couldn’t convert, Gersh went down because he couldn’t catch the ball, and then Johnson went down and wanted a penalty kick but got no answer.
Bizzo denies Pinault
Pino’s low shot was brilliantly saved by Bizot, and then Devinney’s rebound was brilliantly blocked by Digne. After Villa dominated much of the second half, Palace finally had another chance.
The villa is closed!
They started the second half brightly when Morgan Rogers’ cross to Watkins was deflected towards goal but Henderson saved well with his feet and then saved the follow-up effort with ease.

Martinez halftime break
Emiliano Martinez was substituted at half-time, with Marco Bizot taking his place. Martinez walked back to the Villa bench in tracksuit at the start of the second half. It’s a worrying sight for Villa fans.
Halftime: Crystal Palace 0-0 Aston Villa
It was a very even first half with a couple of half chances falling to Brennan Johnson and Ollie Watkins from both sides. Not the most exciting 45.
Johnson and Watkins have a great chance
Johnson had a chance at both ends but was brilliantly blocked by Martinez and looked on the verge of scoring his first goal for Palace following a fine pass from Walton. Watkins came on at the other end, but Lacroix blocked his shot at the crucial moment.

Watkins denies, then Johnson makes reckless effort
There were several chances for both sides, with Ollie Watkins trying to get past Dean Henderson, but the Palace keeper saved well. At the other end, a high ball was clipped to the back post but Brennan Johnson got it all wrong and nearly missed the ball when his volley shot went over.
Villa want penalty but VAR refuses
John McGinn flicked the ball in the zone and hit Tyreke Mitchell in the arm. VAR checked the penalty but his arm was in its natural position. Keep playing!

Crystal Palace news, highlights
Ismaila Sarr will miss the Africa Cup of Nations, while Daniel Munoz, Daichi Kamada and Chris Richards are also absent. Eddie Nketiah is also out, while Nathaniel Clyne and Jefferson Lerma are both doubtful. Glasner relied on very few players and Palace had run out of steam over the festive period.
Aston Villa team news, highlights
Ross Barkley, Evan Ghassan, Paulo Torres, Tyrone Mings and Amadou Onana are still absent, while Emery can remove Watkins and McGinn from the starting XI to give them a rest. But they are all in excellent form and there is very strong competition for Villa’s midfield and attacking positions because Emery rotates very well and Rodgers, Kamara and Tielemans are all excellent.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Preview
Despite recent performance declines, including Beat Newcastle 2-0 on Sunday) Crystal Palace are still in Europe, with the reigning FA Cup champions vying for European qualification. So does Emery, with Aston Villa hanging in the balance in the title race Beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 on Saturday Bouncing back from a loss to Premier League leaders Arsenal.
