LAUREL, Md. (AP) — A 3-year-old first-time colt died Friday shortly after competing in his first race at Laurel Park, a day before the track was to host the Preakness.
The Maryland Racing Commission said Zero died of an apparent heart attack. The cause of death will not be confirmed until the autopsy results are reviewed.

Hit Zero was the favorite over the six furlongs but faltered towards the end, trailing well behind the rest of the field. He is trained by Brittany Russell and her husband Sheldon. Russell also trains Taj Mahal, one of the top horses in the Preakness. Hit Zero is owned by ItsTheJHo, LLC and Evan Trommer.
“In response to Zero’s death, the Commission has initiated all necessary review and investigative processes,” the statement said. “We recognize the significance of this loss and are committed to a thorough and transparent process.”
