China’s Largest Solar Farm Is Doing A Lot More Than Generating Energy

The world’s largest solar power plant complex is located in Qinghai, China, high on the remote Tibetan Plateau. It is much larger than the largest solar farm in the United States and is one of several large-scale projects that the Chinese government hopes to push the country toward a future in which most of its electricity is produced from renewable resources. According to the New York Times, the Qinghai power generation cluster can produce nearly 17,000 megawatts of electricity, but it is more than just a giant energy producer.

A study published in the journal Nature also claimed that the presence of miles of solar panels transformed the desert environment around the farm and actually helped improve the biodiversity of the surrounding area. The study analyzed a wide range of environmental factors, including nutrients in the soil around the solar plant, the range of plant and microbial species living there, and the humidity of the surrounding air.

Researchers found that the presence of solar farms helps increase the moisture content of the soil, which affects its structure. They believe the increased humidity may be due to the panels absorbing most of the solar radiation, causing the soil below to lose less water through evaporation. Regular panel cleaning is also considered a potential cause of increased soil moisture content.

Healthier soil means more plant and microbial life

Improved soil conditions result in a richer variety of microorganisms and plants within the solar farm than in the surrounding desert. New evidence suggests that in addition to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing clean electricity, solar panels can help the environment in more unexpected ways. The study also noted that solar farms require local workers to operate them, helping to increase employment opportunities in areas with relatively few employment opportunities.

China has an advantage in building giant solar farms because most of the world’s solar cell supply comes from Chinese manufacturers. It also has huge domestic electricity demand, especially since it is the world’s largest market for electric vehicles. According to IEA data, global electric vehicle sales will be 17 million units in 2024, of which more than 11 million units will be sold in China. About 10% of the cars on China’s roads are electric, and to power those cars, China needs to continue developing projects such as the Qinghai solar farm cluster. These farms may also have the additional side effect of improving the quality of the surrounding environment if they continue to be built in vast expanses of desert.
