The Baltimore Ravens don’t have a quarterback problem. They have a time problem, and if they crack the code, they may not have a money problem.
As free agency approaches, Lamar Jackson has two years left on the five-year, $260 million contract he signed before the 2023 season. This is good news. The bad news is that his cap hit is projected to be $74.5 million in 2026.

Until this issue is resolved, this number makes meaningful roster construction nearly impossible. Baltimore is confident a new contract will be finalized, and the league still believes Jackson wants to stay with the Ravens long-term, but hope and intent don’t create cap space. Action does.
That’s why what happens with the Kansas City Chiefs this week should have the Ravens’ full attention. They reworked Patrick Mahomes’ contract. In doing so, they lowered his 2026 cap hit from $78.2 million to approximately $34.65 million. They also created more than $43 million in flexibility.
It’s not quite the same situation, by any means. Mahomes’ contract runs until 2031, and Jackson has two years left on his contract, but the principle is the same. Elite quarterbacks and competitive windows require creative accounting, not hesitation.
Eric DeCosta and his staff could lower Jackson’s 2026 cap number by finalizing an extension that spreads future revenue over more years. At some point, it’s no longer a question of numbers, but of priorities.

Jackson has proven that he’s worth whatever record numbers keep him in Baltimore. Some might say he’s worth more than Dak Prescott has on the trade or anyone else at the top of the market. Time will tell if he exceeds that number.
The Chiefs didn’t wait for the pressure to peak before making their move. They made moves early to protect roster flexibility and the championship window. The Ravens now face the same choice. The blueprint exists. The urgency is real. All that’s left is for Baltimore to follow.
Even with generational talent at center, the championship window won’t always be open. The Ravens know what they have in Lamar Jackson. Now it’s up to us to prove that they’re willing to do whatever it takes to get the most out of him. The blueprint was there, the motivation was clear, and the time had come for Baltimore to turn its intentions into ink.
