MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Queen City News) – A Statesville man was arrested after police led a pursuit that lasted more than 30 miles early Sunday morning.
According to the Mooresville Police Department, at 12:30 a.m. on Dec. 28, an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle on Interstate 77. The car was reportedly traveling very fast and appeared to be racing two other vehicles before being stopped.

Police said one of the vehicles, a 2018 Toyota GT86 coupe, failed to stop for the officer and officers fled northbound on Interstate 77 before pursuing the vehicle. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle exited Exit 49A in Statesville and continued east on Route 70 for 20 miles into downtown Salisbury.
The vehicle turned onto Lash Drive and came to a stop, and with the assistance of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was arrested.
The driver, 20-year-old Anthony Jose Velasquez Alonzo, was arrested and the passengers in the car were released at the scene. Alonzo was charged with felony fleeing to evade arrest and other traffic charges. He was granted a $50,000 bond and has a court date on Dec. 29.
The Toyota coupe driven by Alonzo was impounded pursuant to NCGS 20-144.5(g).
