The 2024 Game Awards will be held on December 12 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The live event will be streamed on YouTube and Twitch and will honor the best games of the year across all genres. The awards night is also expected to premiere reveals and trailers for several upcoming and unannounced games. Now, 2K has confirmed that two of its major games, Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country, will get sneak peek trailers at The Game Awards.

2K prepares trailer for The Game Awards

In a post on X Monday, the official Borderlands account announced that a sneak peek trailer for the next game in the series will premiere at the 2024 Game Awards, calling Borderlands 4 “the most ambitious Borderlands yet.”

At the same time, the official controller of “Mafia X” also confirmed that “Mafia: Old Country” will appear at this event.

Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Kingdom both debuted at Gamescom in August, with confirmed 2025 release dates. Gearbox Software’s looter shooter will be coming to PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series S/X next year, Take-Two Interactive’s fiscal 2026.

Borderlands 4

The fourth mainline Borderlands game and seventh entry in the series will follow 2019’s Borderlands 3. 2K has yet to reveal any details about the game, but it has confirmed that players will once again take on the role of a vault hunter searching for secret treasures.

“Everyone at Gearbox has huge ambitions for Borderlands 4 and are doing everything we can to make everything we love about Borderlands 4 better than ever while pushing the game to the next level in exciting new directions,” Gearbox founder and president Randy Pitchford said in an official statement.

Mafia:Old Country

On the same day, 2K also released Mafia: The Old Country, the fourth mainline game in the Mafia series, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. Publisher 2K and developer Hangar 13 have confirmed that the action-adventure game will take players back to 1900s Sicily to tell an original story about the origins of organized crime.

“With Mafia: Old Country , we’re returning to the roots that fans love about the series, crafting a deep, linear narrative with the feel of a classic gangster movie, visiting stunning new locations, and delivering the perfect immersive experience for fans in a tight, focused way,” Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes said in the announcement.

While Borderlands 4 and Mafia 4 both received trailers at Gamescom, it’s likely that the games will receive extended trailers detailing the story and gameplay at The Game Awards. 2K may also reveal the release dates for both upcoming games. In a post on X, Gearbox boss Pitchford confirmed that the trailer for Mafia 4 will include gameplay.

2K parent company Take-Two is looking at a busy fiscal 2026 release calendar with several major game releases. In addition to Borderlands 4 and Mafia: Old Country, the publisher will launch Sid Meier’s Civilization VII in 2025. Take-Two’s 2025 release plan also includes a little-known open-world game, Grand Theft Auto 6. Rockstar Games’ follow-up to Grand Theft Auto V will be released in the fall of 2025.

The Game Awards 2024 will be hosted by creator and producer Geoff Keighley. The nomination list for this year’s awards was announced last month, with PS5 exclusive game “Astro Bot” and Square Enix’s “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth” each receiving seven nominations, including the Game of the Year Award, leading the way. Other Game of the Year nominees include action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong, indie roguelike deck-building game Balatro, groundbreaking role-playing game Metaphor: ReFantazio and the Elden Ring expansion Shadow of the Erdtree.
