The reality of starting a pitching rotation in Major League Baseball is that there are always some arms in every rotation that aren’t exactly ace caliber.

The bottom line is that most teams, with the exception of the Los Angeles Dodgers, have at least one starting fan who doesn’t feel good about it.
The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the teams with a strong rotation, but perhaps not an elite one all around.
That was the case with guys like Chris Bassitt last year.
While Bassett is no Paul Skenes, he still possesses above-average ability, and there’s value in retaining a pitcher like him.
However, the right-hander becomes a free agent this offseason, and some don’t expect him to return to Toronto. Others believe it’s still a possibility, including The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, who has an update on his situation.

“The Padres are looking for a cheap starter on a short-term deal, and Bassett will likely get one. He’s proven to Toronto that he still has something; he can help the Padres become a contender.
“If the O’s miss out on other starters, I could see them giving Bassett the final game. I also think there’s a chance he could return to Toronto to provide them with starting pitching depth,” he wrote.
It’s a little surprising that Bassett doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves.
He may not be an elite player, but he’s been very reliable in recent years and has real value as a starter with at least 27 starts in each of the last five seasons.
