Jamal Musiala is confident of returning to the Germany squad at the end of March as he progresses with Bayern Munich after recovering from a serious leg injury.

In Bayern’s 3-2 victory over Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, midfielder Musiala played 78 minutes. It was his eighth appearance since returning to the field last month after suffering a broken leg and ankle in July.

Asked if he was capable of returning to the national team for World Cup training against Switzerland and Ghana in five weeks, he said: “I believe so.”

Musiala became the first player under the age of 23 to reach 100 Bundesliga wins on Saturday and said the World Cup in the summer was his clear target.

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann hopes Musiala can be a key player for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada and will announce his squad for the upcoming tournament on March 19.

Meanwhile, Musiala and Bayern continue to take a cautious approach to getting him back to his best.

“My first focus is on the Dortmund game and the games that follow,” he said, referring to next week’s Bundesliga title game against second-placed Borussia Dortmund.

“I have to get back into rhythm. I ran a lot and had good times. My mentality is just to improve every game – and not think about the feet,” he said after the Frankfurt game.

“I wish things could go a little faster,” he added, but he was confident he could be back to 100 percent again one day.

Bayern coach Vincent Kompany was not taking any chances, saying: “For me he is still in such form that I don’t want to put pressure on him to be a performance-leading player. We are happy with the situation.”

Sports committee member Max Eberl agreed: “Every minute is good for him. Every week is good for him. For us, he is a player who can make a difference. That’s the impact he has had on us this season – and in the best-case scenario of the summer, also for the DFB.”
