BEREA, Ky. (AP) — A suspect in connection with the shooting deaths of two bank employees during a robbery is in custody in Kentucky, a state trooper said Friday.
Officer Justin Kearney posted online that the person was “believed to be involved” in Thursday’s bank robbery in Berea.
A man wearing a gray and white hoodie, gloves and a mask entered a Bank of America branch in Berea on Thursday and fatally shot a male and female employee, state police said.
Law enforcement officers went door-to-door looking for information and surveillance footage, and used helicopters, drones and police dogs. The Lexington Police Department and the county Sheriff’s Office were involved in the search, along with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
“This was a team effort,” Kearney posted Friday morning.
He did not provide further details.
Schools in the area were placed on lockdown Thursday until campuses were deemed safe. State police said students were not allowed to be bused home and had to be picked up by their parents.
Bank of America said it is working closely with law enforcement and is committed to supporting the victims’ families and bank colleagues.
“We are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred earlier today at our Berea, Kentucky, location where two employees lost their lives,” the company said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, our colleagues and the entire Berea community.”
Berea is approximately 36 miles (58 kilometers) south of Lexington.
