Nintendo Switch 2 Will Support NFC and Wi-Fi 6, FCC Filings Reveal

The Nintendo Switch 2 launched in January, but official details about the hybrid console’s hardware specs and features have yet to be released. The device’s first teaser revealed its design, port selection, and new Joy-Con mechanism, but kept other details under wraps. However, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) documents reveal that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support near field communications (NFC) and Wi-Fi 6. The document also confirms that the Switch 2 will charge via a new second USB Type-C port on the top of the device.

FCC filing reveals Switch 2 details

FCC filings (spotted by The Verge ) confirm that the Nintendo Switch 2 will feature RFID functionality on the right Joy Con, similar to its predecessor. In the documents, the Switch 2 is named BEE-001, while the left and right Joy-Cons are called BEE-014 and BEE-012 respectively.

Documents show that the console will receive Wi-Fi 6 support with bandwidth up to 80Mhz, which is an upgrade from Nintendo Switch Wi-Fi 5. The documents also reveal that the Switch 2 is rated for up to a 15V AC adapter, the same as the original Switch. However, the document also mentions a 20V AC adapter.

Additionally, the second USB Type-C port on the top of the Switch 2 seen in the first look trailer can be used to charge the console, the documents reveal. There is a USB Type-C port on the bottom of the Switch.

Last month, renders of the Switch 2 were leaked, showing off its design from every angle. The Switch 2 is rumored to come with a more powerful dock than its predecessor. A patent released by Nintendo in February also suggested that the new Joy-Cons would feature a new magnetic connection mechanism, which was evident in the console’s trailer. The Switch 2 ditches its predecessor’s slide mechanism for attaching the Joy-Con to the device in favor of a snap-on mechanism.
