Could former Commanders LB Bobby Wagner land with AFC contender?

At the end of the 2025 season, the Washington Commanders face a slew of impending free agents before the market opens on March 11. A total of 40 players will become free agents. Since then, the Commanders have brought back 17 of those players; six have signed contracts elsewhere and 17 still haven’t reached an agreement.

One of the remaining free agents is linebacker Bobby Wagner. NFL analysts and experts tried to figure out the best landing spots for the remaining top free agents, including Wagner. In Matt Bowen’s recent ESPN article, Wagner appears to be the best fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Wagner’s 9.5 tackles per game rank sixth overall in the 2025 class, indicating he can still hit the ball quickly and get run stops. He does have limited coverage at this point in his career, and Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile will have to address that.

However, as a defender who falls behind early on, Wagner could potentially step into a role next to Foyesade Olokun. Devin Lloyd, a mainstay in Jacksonville’s secondary, signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Panthers this offseason.

If any team could benefit from Wagner’s veteran leadership and performance, it’s the Jaguars. Their leading tackler in 2025 is linebacker Foyesade Oluokun, who finished with 143 tackles. He is followed by safety Andrew Wingard with 84 tackles. This is with Devin Lloyd. Jacksonville saw Lloyd leave in free agency this offseason and needed a replacement. While the current version of Wagner lacks Lloyd’s athleticism, he could bring to Jacksonville in 2026 what he brought to Washington in 2024.

Even at his age, Bobby Wagner could be a difference-maker in Jacksonville. His presence, vast experience and outstanding qualities are all reasons to add Wagner to your team. For the Jaguars, increasing his production would be huge. Wagner has 2,000 tackles in his career, averaging nearly 143 tackles per season. He may not be the player he once was, but he still has some energy and could serve well to help a Jacksonville team that’s thin on depth and production.
