Álvaro Arbeloa: “For me as a Madridista, Mourinho is number one”

Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa opened up about his potential replacement at a press conference ahead of the game against Sevilla, saying: “I don’t understand the whole ‘unruly dressing room’ thing; I don’t agree with it. The day when the club decides on their manager for next season, they will be where they think they will be. It’s the right time to do it. For me, as a player and as a Real Madrid man, Mourinho was the first one and I will continue to think that he is and will always be “one of us” and I will be happy to see him at home.”

Sevilla have won their last three games; they are doing very well under Luis Garcia. He successfully turned the team around. The Estadio Pizjuan always excites us because of the atmosphere created when Real Madrid play there. They have one of the best fan bases in Spain. This will once again be a tough battle.

“I just got here and I saw him. I told him to stay calm and I’ll take care of it. I know these things are going to be in the news. Everything he said, we’ve discussed it before; I took it in stride. I understand how guys feel when they’re not playing.” Kellyan the other day Not happy, I like that. For me it’s a lot more normal than what’s happening now and the best thing for him is to play in the second half and it might be different if there’s no game tomorrow, but I’m calm about what happened in the last few days.”

Arbeloa on whether it bothers him

“Whenever I talk to players, I’m not concerned that they might share any of our conversations. When I talk privately, I like to keep it private, but it doesn’t bother me if it’s discussed. I spoke to him before the game and, as I told you at the time, no problem.”

Arbeloa’s tenure as coach

“I started as a coach in the third division and I will leave as a first division coach who has coached in the Champions League. The last four months have been a great experience and learning curve for me. It has been a master class to stand in front of you all. I will leave with a clear conscience.”

Arbeloa on how he will be remembered

“Real Madrid has millions of fans and some will identify with it more than others. I feel the love of the fans. I am 43 years old and I have spent 20 years at Real Madrid. It has been a long time in a place that I consider my home.”

Arbeloa’s most difficult period as coach

“The hardest part at this club is always when you don’t win. That’s what hurts the most for me, not helping the players win titles: because we are faced with high expectations and because we have the hopes of so many people on our shoulders.”
