Australia’s Hazlewood suffers setback in injury return

Australia bowler Josh Hazlewood has suffered a setback in his recovery from injury after he reported Achilles soreness in training this week.

Hazlewood, 34, one of the world’s leading bowlers, has not featured in the Ashes series against England so far, having been ruled out of the first Ashes Test against England in Perth due to a hamstring problem.

He has been plagued by injuries in recent years – he has missed seven Tests in Australia since the start of 2024 – including an Achilles tendon problem.

Australia called his setback a “low-level issue”. Hazlewood, who took 295 wickets in 76 Tests, is expected to resume running and bowling next week, but it is still a blow for Australia.

The third Test begins in Adelaide on December 17 (23:30 GMT on December 16), followed by the fourth Test on December 26 and the fifth Test on January 4.

Australia captain and bowler Pat Cummins has also missed the first two Ashes Tests as he recovers from a back injury.
