How to Activate UAN on EPFO Portal — A Step by Step Guide

Universal Account Number (UAN) is the account into which Employees Provident Fund (EPF) deposits are made. In many companies, salaried employees receive Provident Fund as a benefit, which saves tax and increases long-term savings. Many employees know they have money in their provident fund savings, but often don’t know where the money is and how it is used. To check PF balance, you need to activate your UAN first. This is a fairly simple process that you need to follow if you have never activated a UAN before. After activating UAN, you will be able to check PF balance.

How to find UAN

Your UAN will usually appear on your payslip. If it doesn’t appear here, you should contact your organization’s finance department to find your UAN. This is only applicable to those who have PF deducted from their salary.

How to activate UAN

If you have never checked your PF balance, follow the steps below to activate your UAN through the Employees Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) website.

  1. Go to EPFO ​​website and click Activate UAN in the lower right corner of the page.
  2. Enter your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number and verification code text. Then click Get authorization password.
  3. Now, your mobile number will get a one-time password (OTP). Copy it.
  4. Verify all the details on the EPFO ​​page and tick the checkbox next to I agree.
  5. Paste the OTP from your phone into Enter one-time password then click Verify OTP and activate UAN.

This will activate your UAN and a password will be sent to your mobile number. You still need to wait for six hours before logging into the EPFO ​​portal to check your PF balance. Six hours after activating UAN, you can check your PF balance.
