Samsung Handheld Gaming Device With Foldable Display Spotted in Design Patent

samsung foldable console patent 1743072207071

Samsung showed off the Flex gaming console, a concept foldable gaming device, at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025) earlier this month, and a design patent has now revealed another foldable idea from the South Korean tech group. Samsung has designed a handheld gaming console with a display that expands into a larger screen, and the device comes in a variety of configurations. It also shows that its controls look similar to those on popular controllers.

The design patent (from 91Mobiles) includes several drawings of a handheld gaming console that appears to be equipped with a foldable display. At first glance (Figure 1), it appears to be a clamshell foldable display, with controls located on the left and right sides of the device. We can also see the two panels that fold up (Picture 2) and the hinges with shoulder buckles on the sides (Picture 3).

The file also contains drawings showing the right side (Figure 5) and left side (Figure 7) of the device, and it appears to have a slim design. The top view is shown in Figure 6, where we can see the two thumbsticks, the directional buttons, and the shoulder buttons at the top of the device.

The next set of images (Figure 9 – Figure 12) shows the gaming device with its display flat and open without any creases. We can also see a top view of the device in Figure 13, which shows the display when fully unfolded. The image below shows the bottom of the phone, which doesn’t appear to have any display components.

The last image (Figure 15) shows the device with the display opened at an angle. This seems to be the way handheld devices are designed to be used. It’s unclear, though, if the larger screen will be used to show the same games, or if the lower half could be used as a secondary display to show useful information.

Like Samsung’s Flex gaming console concept, there’s no word on whether the company plans to launch a device based on the design featured in this patent document. The company currently offers the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold smartphones, but has yet to announce plans to enter the foldable gaming handheld market.
