A 33-year-old man died while attempting a BASE jump in Utah, authorities said.
In a press release shared with People, the Provo Police Department said first responders were called to Rock Canyon at approximately 12:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 21, for reports of a man who had fallen into an area known as the “Bad Banana.”
“Sadly, the man did not survive his injuries,” police said.
Detectives identified the victim as Weston Huff, 33, of American Fork, Utah. Police added that Huff ventured alone but was an “experienced skydiver.”
“It appears he was BASE jumping from the top of the canyon and likely experienced parachute malfunction,” authorities added. “Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones of Weston Huff.”
A spokesperson for the Provo Police Department tells PEOPLE that the investigation into the incident is ongoing pending a report from the medical examiner’s office.
In addition to his experience in paragliding and BASE jumping, Huff was a certified tandem paragliding instructor, Trina Preece, the victim’s mother, told NBC affiliate KSL.
“People put their lives in his hands,” she said. “His life was in his own hands, if not someone else’s.”
The family noted that Huff was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome and Asperger’s syndrome.
Pulis told the media: “Weston has had a lot of difficulties, things that we can share and things that he will never share that are too painful, too traumatic, too distressing, things that he may have suffered.”
“So for people like that to have access to kindness and kindness and love, I mean, a lot of people walk away from painful experiences out of boredom and callousness,” she continued.
His family also said Huff was born to fly, telling KSL their loved one had jumped from a rocky canyon before.
“According to one of the people who was there, he pulled the rope and the parachute didn’t fully deploy and he died on impact,” Huff’s sister, Kalli Bistrattin Machado, told KSL. “Someone saw it and ran over and performed CPR for 10 to 15 minutes and then emergency personnel arrived and pronounced him dead.”
A GoFundMe was created on behalf of the Huff family
“Weston has a special bond with all members of his family, especially his mother Trina, who overcame many odds to bring him into the world 33 years ago,” organizers wrote in a description of the fundraiser.
