While the Diamondbacks’ Opening Day roster has yet to be officially announced, it currently appears to be set through the elimination process. Only 13 position players remain, meaning James McCann, Tim Tava, Jorge Baroza and Ildemaro Vargas round out the bench. On the bullpen side, at this point – barring a late waiver claim – the team will start the year without a left-hander and instead go all-right-handed:
Three more transfers will be needed on the 40-man roster to supplement Vargas, Rose and Loaiciga. Maybe Tyler Locklear, Christian Mena, and Blake Walston will be on the 60-day IL? We’ll see. Anyway, here’s tonight’s lineup:
It feels like this could be the exact lineup for Thursday’s Opening Day team (with the obvious exception of Kelly). Meanwhile, the Guardians sent former guard Slade Cecconi, who we traded to Cleveland for Josh Naylor. I’m not sure Cecconi will turn into Max Scherzer, but he’s already more valuable to the Indians than he was as a Diamondback. I’m also excited to see Corbin Carroll return to RF tonight. Jordan Lawlar starts on the left side, though whether that’s still a stable setup remains to be determined according to Torey Lovullo.
