Safety Warning Issued After ‘Freak’ Pickleball Accident Death

Pickleball continues to be on the rise in the United States as it becomes increasingly popular with older generations.

Men and women in their 50s, 60s, 70s and even 80s play the sport, which is a cross between tennis and table tennis. It’s more approachable than tennis, but more physical and “athletic” than table tennis.

But that doesn’t mean it’s without danger.

Over the weekend, Jeff Weber, the “father” of modern cheerleading, died from injuries following a “freak” pickleball accident. He reportedly fell on a hard surface while playing and suffered blunt force trauma to his head. Weber was only 76 years old at the time.

While pickleball remains popular, it’s important to take the necessary safety and health measures when playing pickleball.

“Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States and is loved for its fast-paced gatherings, fun social environment, and appeal to people of all ages. However, like any physical activity, there is a risk of injury, especially for new players or those who enter the game without proper preparation. The good news is that many pickleball injuries are preventable with a few simple habits,” the health department warns.

As a reminder, you need to perform the following necessary steps before playing the game:

  • light aerobics: A brisk walk or jog on the court can help increase your heart rate and body temperature.

  • dynamic stretching: Stretching movements that mimic the movements of pickleball, such as arm circles, leg swings, hip circles, and torso twists.

  • Shadow practice: Practice short, controlled lunges and quick side-to-side steps without using a paddle to warm up muscles used in competition.

Here are the safety measures you should take when playing:

  • wear suitable shoes: Choose sneakers with good lateral support – running shoes can increase the risk of ankle sprains.

  • Use good form: Learn proper technique, especially swing and footwork. Reaching too far or twisting awkwardly while returning the ball can cause a strain.

  • Communicate with your partner: Using phrases like “my” or “your” can help avoid collisions or last-minute dashes.

  • stay hydrated and rest: Fatigue can lead to poor posture and slower reaction times, both of which increase the risk of injury.

Here’s how to avoid injuries after exercise:

  • gentle stretching exercises: Focus on the calves, hamstrings, shoulders, and forearms, which are the areas that need the most work in pickleball.

  • walk slowly: Let your heart rate gradually return to normal.

  • Hydrate and energize: Stay hydrated and, if you play a long game, have a snack that contains protein and carbohydrates.

Please pay attention to safety when playing.
