NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer who was responsible for security at the mayor’s mansion and City Hall has been suspended after the department said he shot a man in the head while off-duty, police said Wednesday.

Police said the shooting happened in the Bronx around 9 p.m. Monday after the officer interacted with several men about a stolen car. The officer, whose name has not been released, has not been arrested or charged with a crime, police said.

The 30-year-old victim was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police did not release the victim’s name.

A spokesman for the New York Police Department said the shooting was being investigated by the department’s Police Investigative Division and that the officer had been suspended without pay.

A spokesman for Mayor Zohran Mamdani referred questions to the police department. The official residence of the city’s mayor is a grand residence known as Gracie Mansion.

Ada Gomez, manager of a bar across the street from where the shooting occurred, said one of the bar’s windows was hit and broken, but no one inside was injured.

“Imagine if someone had been sitting in that window,” Gomez said.
