When 21-year-old superstar Roman Anthony made his MLB debut last July against the Tampa Bay Rays, former Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman was in the clubhouse. Two months later, Anthony suffered an oblique strain and missed the remainder of the 2025 season.

Anthony will return to the Red Sox lineup after the World Baseball Classic, but he will be without teammate and mentor Bregman. Anthony said he wasn’t looking forward to that reality after reuniting with Team USA.

“He’s probably helped me more than anyone at the major league level so far,” Anthony told Alex Spear of the Boston Globe. “Being with him last year, learning from him, learning from him, knowing his performance, knowing his game plan and everything, knowing that he just changed the clubhouse and I’ve told him a little bit and joked with him, I’m sad to leave him.”

The Red Sox added a lot of talent this offseason but were unable to retain the two-time World Series champion.

Bregman was named an All-Star in just one season with Boston after signing a three-year, $120 million contract. He opted out of the final two years, opting instead to sign a five-year contract with the Chicago Cubs worth $175 million, with reduced AAV and more years.
