On Monday, Apple announced a surprise that caught the tech world off guard: AirPods Max 2 are now available. No leaks. There are no rumors. There was no pre-event whispering. The company just dropped the long-awaited upgrade to the headset without any warning.
The most important upgrade is the new H2 chip, which Apple claims is 1.5 times more effective in active noise reduction than the original AirPods Max. It’s a meaningful leap for a headset that hasn’t undergone a true internal overhaul since its debut in December 2020.
AirPods Max 2 are priced at $549 and will be available for pre-order on March 25. Shipping and in-store availability is expected to begin in early April.
The original AirPods Max ran on Apple’s H1 chip, which is the same chip as older AirPods models but has aged well. The AirPods Pro 2 moved to H2 back in 2022, and the over-ear lineup has been playing catch-up ever since.
With H2, AirPods Max 2 get the full set of features pro users have wanted for years. These include Adaptive Audio, which automatically mixes ANC and transparency modes based on your surroundings. If you walk from a quiet corridor to a noisy subway platform, the headphones adjust themselves.

Conversational awareness is also new. When you start talking to someone nearby, the headphones automatically lower the music volume and reduce background noise, so you can talk quickly without touching anything.
Eric Treski, Apple’s director of audio product marketing, said: “With H2’s incredible performance, AirPods Max’s ANC efficiency is improved by 1.5 times, resulting in the ultimate all-day listening experience.”

In addition to noise cancellation, AirPods Max 2 feature a new high dynamic range amplifier that Apple says delivers clearer audio while retaining the earphones’ signature sound. Spatial audio has also been improved, with better instrument positioning and more accurate bass response.

Battery life remains at 20 hours with ANC turned on, unchanged from the previous generation. That’s still a pain point compared to the competition, though the H2’s efficiency gains help maintain it even with all the new features running simultaneously.
The AirPods Max 2 enter a premium segment that has become more competitive since the original launch. The Sony WH-1000XM6 ($449) and Bose QC Ultra ($429) both cost $100 or more less than Apple, and both have strong reputations for noise cancellation.
Independent testing consistently rates the Sony XM6’s raw ANC performance as top-notch. Reviewers at RecordingNow found that the XM6 was better than the AirPods Max in terms of ANC effect, especially against flight noise. The Bose QC Ultra is the leader in comfort and is highly competitive in noise cancellation.
Where Apple leads is in its ecosystem depth and transparency model. Comparative tests of the three always give Apple the win with the most natural transparency mode, seamless multi-device switching for iPhone and Mac users, and a premium build quality that Sony and Bose can’t match.
Apple has retained the signature anodized aluminum frame, mesh covers, and plush ear pads that made the original AirPods Max instantly recognizable. The digital crown and squeeze controls remain unchanged. Weight remains at approximately 385 grams.
The color lineup has been refreshed to Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple and Blue. USB-C has been standard since the 2024 update, so there’s no Lightning holdover here.
Reviewers will notice one gap: There’s still no lossless wireless. Lossless audio upgrades require a physical USB-C cable connection, a limitation that exists with all Bluetooth headsets due to bandwidth limitations that the protocol has yet to address.
For Apple users who are already part of the ecosystem, AirPods Max 2 is the easiest option. The H2 upgrade is the real deal, and the combination of adaptive audio, real-time translation and studio-quality recording make these a truly compelling professional tool rather than just a lifestyle purchase.
For cross-platform listeners or anyone who travels frequently and values pristine ANC, the Sony WH-1000XM6 remains the leader in the spec sheet and is $100 cheaper. Its 30-hour battery, compared to Apple’s 20 hours, is a meaningful practical advantage in itself.
