Royal Marines stage daring Arctic raid with German submarine as part of NATO exercise

Putin launches: British Royal Marines use German submarines to carry out daring Arctic raid as part of Nato drills. The Royal Marines emerged from the icy depths of the Arctic fjords aboard a German U-boat to rehearse a brave commando operation. On March 3, the commandos aboard the attack submarine U-35 surfaced about 200 miles above the Arctic Circle as part of this year’s Cold Response 26, NATO’s largest military exercise in the region. They involve 14 countries and more than 25,000 soldiers. The Marines, part of a special forces unit specialized in reconnaissance and direct naval gunfire from behind enemy lines, quietly departed from U-35s in inflatable assault boats, carried out their mission, then returned and disappeared beneath the waves. The purpose of the mission was to sneak undetected and remain concealed while scouting “enemy” positions, calling in naval gunfire from Allied warships before making a stealthy escape. It is part of a larger UK deployment in the Arctic, with around 1,500 commandos on duty in northern Norway since January.
