Another San Francisco grocery store is closing, this time near USF

San Francisco is losing another major grocery store.

Lucky’s parent company, The Save Mart Companies, said it will close its store at 1750 Fulton Street near the University of San Francisco on Sept. 11, adding to a growing number of supermarket closures in the city.

A notice sent to state officials this week said the closure is expected to be permanent and affect 48 workers. Phil Keene, Save Mart’s senior director of communications and government affairs, said in a statement to The Chronicle that the company decided to close the store after continuing to struggle financially.

“We regularly evaluate the performance of all stores to ensure they meet business standards,” Keane said. “In the normal course of business, we sometimes have to make difficult decisions and close underperforming stores.”

Keane said the Fulton Street store will close “based on economic factors.”

“Closing a store is not a decision we take lightly, but this store has had performance issues for an extended period of time,” he said. “We have worked hard to improve and renovate the location, but it is not showing the sales and profits needed to continue operating. In fact, despite the best efforts of our team, we are losing money year over year at this location.”

All employees at the store will be affected, the document said. Some employees may be eligible to transfer to nearby stores, depending on availability and seniority, according to Save Mart. Employees also have the right to lay off additional entry-level workers under applicable collective bargaining agreements, the notice said.

Affected positions include 31 general-purpose clerks, as well as managers, service specialists, supervisor clerks and meat cutters.

The planned closures follow other recent grocery store disruptions in San Francisco. Last year, Lucky closed its Bayview store, which had been the area’s only large supermarket. Safeway is also closing its Fillmore District store in 2025, prompting city officials to seek more convenient ways to bring in alternative grocery stores.

Keane said Save Mart will continue to serve customers at the Lucky store located at 1515 Sloat Blvd. San Francisco and 6843 Mission St., Daly City.

“We remain committed to the San Francisco region,” he said.
