Landry appoints GOP mega-donor to LSU Board of Supervisors

Gov. Jeff Landry appointed Lake Charles businessman John Condos, who has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Landry and Republicans, to the LSU Board of Supervisors.

Condos, who has practices in the areas of health care law and medical marijuana, is a former member of the University of Louisiana System’s Board of Supervisors and serves as one of Landry’s appointees to the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District starting in 2024.

“John is a proven leader with the experience and vision to help take LSU to the next level. Louisiana deserves the best, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering,” Landry said in a social media post.

Kondos is a graduate of McNeese State University where he also previously served as a professor. he replaces Lafayette attorney Glenn Armentor resigned from the board this week after missing a year of meetings. Landry said Armento resigned to focus on his legal practice. Former Gov. John Bel Edwards appointed Armentor to the LSU Board of Trustees in 2016.

Armento could not be reached for comment.

Condos has donated more than $150,000 to Landry and groups supporting him since Landry began his campaign for governor, and more than $687,000 to various candidates and political organizations since 2003, according to campaign finance records. Although he primarily supported Republican causes, he also made occasional donations to Democrats, including New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno.

As chairman of the UL System Board of Governors Athletic Committee, Condos was a cheerleader for McNeese’s hiring of former LSU basketball coach Will Wade. Wade was fired from LSU in 2022 due to alleged recruiting violations, although some Tigers fans want him rehired.
