Cooper Witten commits to Oklahoma, 2 months after his father Jason joined program as TE coach

Cooper Witten followed his Dallas Cowboys great father to Oklahoma State.

The four-star recruit announced his commitment to the Sooners on Tuesday, two months after the program hired Jason Witten as its new tight ends coach. His other three finalists were also SEC schools in Georgia, Texas A&M and his father’s alma mater, Tennessee.

On3 and Rivals rank Cooper as the second-best linebacker prospect in the 2027 class and the 31st overall prospect. He joins an Oklahoma class that currently ranks No. 2 nationally behind Ohio State in On3’s 2027 team rankings.

In an interview with counterpart Sam Spiegelman, Cooper praised head coach Brent Venables and the Sooners defense while noting that his father’s job was not the most important part of the selection process:

“My dad has been my coach the last few years of my high school career, so it’s going to be really cool to be coached by him again and play for him,” he said. “I don’t want that to be the deciding factor in where I want to go. I want to find what’s best for me.”

Jason, an 11-time Pro Bowl tight end for the Cowboys, retired permanently in 2021 after a brief stint as a broadcaster with ESPN and a return to the NFL. He began his coaching career as the head coach at Liberty Christian School and won back-to-back Texas State Championships in 2023 and 2024.

Cooper played two seasons under his father, but now he will work on the other side of the field while his father handles tight end.
