A generous gift turns into a tense standoff for a couple trying to get out of debt.
Jared said on a recent episode of The Ramsay Show that he feels like he’s caught in a “tug of war” between his mother and his wife. His mom offered to buy him his dream car later this year, a brand new Ford Raptor worth about $100,000.
Jared and his wife are working to eliminate $86,000 in personal debt by paying off all non-mortgage debt. They started in January and expected to be debt-free within 16 to 18 months. Last year, the couple’s income increased by $220,000 as his wife returned to work after staying home with the children.

Still, they are in the early stages of their debt-paying journey. Jared said his wife would rather use the money to eliminate their balance than park a six-figure truck in the driveway.
“There’s nothing better than a conditional gift,” co-host george carmel joked at the beginning of the call.
Jared explained that the offer was part of a family tradition. His grandfather, a successful businessman, once told his children that he wished he could help them buy their dream home sooner so he could watch them enjoy it. Jared’s mother, now retired and financially secure, is doing something similar for her own children. His brother had received his gift. Now it’s Jared’s turn.
But there is history. Jared admits that his mom’s involvement in their financial lives created tension over the past period. His wife hadn’t grown up around money, but for the first time she was making a decent income and wanted to stick with their plan.

“Her pattern of interfering and potentially crossing your marital and financial boundaries makes me think your wife is uncomfortable,” Kamal added.
Carmel focuses on practical aspects. Even if the truck is free, owning it still comes with higher insurance costs, maintenance costs, and taxes. Taking on these expenses while paying off debt can strain their budget.
At one point, Kamal makes a pointed point about the nature of gifts. “She has no control over what the gift is,” he said, referring to Jared’s wife.
