Venus Williams has been sidelined since losing in the first round of the Australian Open.
To most people, this probably doesn’t come as a shock. Given that she’s 45, it’s only natural that her schedule looks very different from others who are still struggling to tour.

It seems she doesn’t need to continue playing. She stayed because she loved it and it showed. Fans relish every opportunity to watch the greatest players in the game compete.
Now her stature and impressive competitiveness against younger opponents have earned her another wild-card berth, this time in Indian Wells.

In a press release from the tournament, the American expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to compete in such a high-profile event.
She thanked the organizers and said: “I’m excited to be back in Indian Wells and can’t wait to compete back in my home state of California. This game is always a special experience and there’s nothing better than playing in front of these incredible fans.”

“I’ve made a lot of fun memories here over the years and I’m grateful to the tournament for bringing me back and giving me the opportunity to compete in singles and doubles.”
After working together at last year’s U.S. Open, she will once again partner with Laila Fernandez in doubles this year.
Tournament Director Tommy Haas added: “It is an honor to award the first wild card to this year’s tournament to Venus Williams.
“Venus is a legend of the sport and one of the most accomplished athletes the sport has ever seen. We are delighted to welcome her back to Tennis Paradise and give fans another chance to see her compete in singles and doubles.”

Venus Williams and Laila Fernandez reunite at Indian Wells after stunning US Open
There’s a lot of interest in Venus and Lyla teaming up again, especially after they played well together last time.
The American-Canadian pair performed well at Flushing Field, making it all the way to the quarterfinals before meeting Taylor Townsend and Katrina Siniakova, who eventually reached the final.
Along the way, they eliminated Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez, then easily dispatched Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi.
They then faced another seeded pair in the round of 16, but they didn’t seem to be bothered and won in straight sets.

Their momentum was halted by the top seeds in a close battle where they couldn’t quite capitalize on their chances. Still, it was a strong performance that set the stage for their reunion ahead of Indian Wells.
