It’s been a remarkable career for the 20-year-old, who retired after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics after finishing eighth in the short program.

In 2024, she decided to return to skating and ended her comeback with a gold medal.

But to local skaters and those who have followed her career, her victory came as no surprise.

ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Lyanne Melendez interviewed Liu in 2019, when the newly minted gold medalist was just 13 years old, and reflected on her future Olympic dreams.
