The Chicago Bears waived linebacker Amen Obongbemiga on Thursday, their first salary cap victim of the 2026 offseason.

Ogbongbemiga signed a one-year contract with the Bears in 2024 and received a two-year, $5 million extension in 2025. He was primarily a contributor on special teams, but he did spend some time on defense along with DeMarco Jackson due to injuries to Tremaine Edmonds, T.J. Edwards and Noah Sewell.

Obongbemiga was scheduled to cost $2.445 million in salary cap space in 2026. But since his release, the Bears have freed up $2.07 million in salary cap space and only lost $375,000 in dead money. While the NFL has yet to release official 2026 salary cap numbers (expected next week), Chicago is currently projected to be $4.11 million over the cap.

But there’s still time for general manager Ryan Boles to make some moves through contract restructuring and/or additional releases to make room. Some other potential salary cap losses to watch include linebacker Tremaine Edmonds, tight end Cole Kmet and running backs DeAndre Swift and Rochon Johnson.
