Not all fantasy basketball playoff games are won the same way. High Score, Points League and Nine Cat Race all require different strategies to win the championship. This primer breaks down the real drivers of each format as the playoffs approach — roster decisions, waiver logic, and schedule awareness to last through the fantasy postseason.
high score
🙌 Forget the floors, it’s all about the benefits
We hunt big animals here. Consistently high-level players won’t increase your chances of winning high points – and unlike standard points leagues or Nine Cats, schedule doesn’t matter as much here either. You’re not trying to develop a series of games that accumulate raw production or efficiency figures. You need a blast. A spike match wins your week, and it changes everything about how you build your roster.

😏 Look for bad defense
The strength of this format is not in identifying stars, but in finding complementary players who can provide an elite game at any time during the week. The waiver wire is stacked with depth players whose roles have quietly expanded over the past month, and now guys can get the green light with just 30 minutes a night and nothing to lose (but a real-life win). When one of your players is in the bottom ten defensively, take action.
Defensive quality is the only matchup situation worth tracking in high scoring. One resource you can use is FantasyPros’ Defense & Position Tool, where you can filter by a team’s performance over the past 7, 15 and 30 days. This way, you can measure how poorly certain teams performed at different times. This is a great way to take advantage of a schedule that could see the total number of games exceed market expectations.
💥 Reliable in moving, unstable in chasing
Before the playoffs begin, trade your high-level, low-ceiling players to league managers who overvalue them (Yahoo’s default trade deadline is March 5). Use this capital to acquire volatile players that have proven their breakout potential. While the trade deadline hasn’t expired yet, I would try to do a 2-for-1 trade to remove some roster depth and thus free up a spot on the roster to take advantage of any glaring absences or injuries around the league. I know the bench is short, but don’t hold yourself back because of guys who aren’t even in your lineup.

🤔 Where do you stand?
Assume you have a bye; zero stress scouting and trading. Identify boom candidates for increased playing time. Take action before your opponent takes the field after the first round – stay active!
You can’t survive conservatively if you’re on a bubble; aggressive cap-first lineups are exactly what the format rewards, so take advantage of small slate opportunities to insert players with 45+ fantasy point caps. Remember, upside is more important here than volume.
Standard Points League
😌 Quantity is important, but so is quality
Points leagues live and die by the matches that are played, as the key to victory is accumulating more points than your opponent. A common sentiment is “play more games, get more points”, but not all games are created equal. Smaller games — nights where the NBA plays seven or fewer games — are where you can get more value (quality games). Just because a team plays four games in a week doesn’t mean you’ll be able to fit everyone into your lineup for every game.

The big slate is inevitable and you can’t get everyone started. So the best way to get those extra games and use the depth to win more games is to review the schedule before the game. I use the advanced schedule for Hashtag Basketball. This is a great resource for planning the regular season and playoffs. Now be sure to identify those nights in the playoff window and fill the added depth with players who can play on smaller boards.
✌️ Causing unavailability and unreliability
Start offloading players who will be load-managed or will lose playing time over the next two months. These are roster spot liabilities; instead, targets are players on competing seeding teams or tank teams, which provides young players with extra runs and opportunities. There was a ton of injury news coming out on Wednesday, and it’s only going to be that way for a few more weeks. Be prepared to take immediate action and obtain immunity.
🤔 Where do you stand?
If you’re leaning toward bye, I’d take a similar approach to high scores. Plan and evaluate your team a week in advance to identify players who will play a large amount of games in the final two weeks of the playoffs. Additionally, it is worth hiding high-ranking players who may have been eliminated, or were unable to eradicate their opponents in the heat of battle.

For those of you in the points league bubble, be honest about whether your supplements are helping you get in or helping you get deep – ideally, both. Prioritize players who have ample playoff schedules and are producing now. Popular anchors on the load management team can get you in, but will disappear in week 21.
Focus on the team with the highest total points in the game and target depth contributors who are guaranteed playing time — in a points league, quantity is everything.
9cat alliance
5️⃣ > 9️⃣ Aim for five wins, not nine
Coaches who lose nine-cat championships are almost always the ones who try to compete everywhere. Know your five categories, hold them firmly, and selectively acknowledge the rest. A roster that is downplayed in all nine categories will likely lose to a team that dominates in five of them every time.

How do you determine what you’re good at? Check your league page:
Go to: standings -> current standings -> head-to-head statistics -> wins and losses
In which categories do you consistently win? Unless you trade in the next few weeks, these categories are who you are. Each increase in immunity should enhance these advantages. However, evaluating other opponents’ lineups may reveal weaknesses that you can compensate for with saves. I’ve done this before with turnovers – catching big guys who don’t get a high usage rate and don’t turn the ball over. Know who you are and work towards it.
😅 Don’t just add, think carefully
What’s the most common way Nine Cat managers screw up their business? Chase volume. Quality of play rules still apply, just like in points leagues, but you have to be more selective with your exemptions. Add a high-volume, inefficient scorer and watch your FG% crater all week long. Think about it carefully to maximize your advantages.

🤔 Where do you stand?
If you’re fighting for a bye, do a category review you haven’t had time to do yet. Find a immunity rider that shores up your weakest win category and makes you harder to beat. Also, scout your potential second-round opponents—know their weaknesses before playing a game.
For those of you bubbling over, give up your category identity for a moment. This week you need to win, which may mean categories you wouldn’t normally compete in. Enter the room first, then return to play the game once you’re in a group.
Among the nine cats, target teams have 11-12 games between the playoff start dates (Weeks 19, 20, or 21) with some quality games mixed in. Add those players whose stats fit your strongest category – not just any warm bodies.
