Bub’s Bar-B-Q closing its doors at month’s end: ‘Help us say goodbye’

A beloved barbecue restaurant in western Massachusetts has announced it will close at the end of February due to financial difficulties.

Bub’s Bar-BQ on Amherst Road in Sunderland said on Facebook on Monday afternoon that the restaurant’s building has been sold and the restaurant will be leaving the place it has called home for the past 46 years.

However, the owners said they hope to reopen in a new location in the future. The business will also continue to accept catering requests.

“My wife and I worked extremely hard to keep this building,” the Facebook post read. “We had saved money, talked to banks, lawyers, contractors, electricians, but the final sale amount was too high and the building needed a lot of work after years of neglect.”

The building required thousands of dollars worth of work, the owners said, adding a personal note to the announcement: “My wife and I were also diagnosed with unexplained infertility during this time, which was another financial strain.”

The owners said they hope to find a new home for Bub’s Bar-BQ and encourage customers to come back in the final weeks.

“It’s an honor to meet all of the regular customers and hear your stories about eating at bubs BBQ over the years and see all of the UMass alumni bringing their UMass kids to keep the tradition going,” the owner said. “We hope that when we find a new home, you can come back and continue making new memories.”

Bub’s Bar-BQ was founded in 1979 by Howard “Bub” Tiley. His son took over the restaurant in 2000, then sold it to a longtime manager who ran the restaurant from 2012 to 2022. The current owner is Andrew Garlo, according to the restaurant’s website.
