Terrifying Humanoid Robots Are Now Patrolling The Streets Of China

EngineAI is a Chinese company best known for its humanoid fighting robot, the T800, which made headlines for kicking the company’s CEO. EngineAI has reportedly deployed a new “Terminator”-style robot to patrol the streets of Chinese cities, at least for the first time. EngineAI’s new PM01 humanoid robot was spotted in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. This model belongs to the same family as the T800, both of which share the terrifying look of autonomous robots from science fiction movies. In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the PM01 humanoid robot can be seen walking in front of two police officers at a famous tourist attraction.

The debut is the first trial, and it’s unclear when the humanoid robot will be officially deployed to supplement police patrols. Nonetheless, the PM01 could well become an interesting tool for public safety support. That said, while the humanoid robot looks scary, other companies point out that its interface is more human-like and not like something out of a Terminator. For example, future robot traffic police have been deployed in Chinese cities such as Wuhu, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Chengdu, and local governments may prefer more humane robots to Terminator-like robots.

AiMOGA’s humanoid robot serves as traffic officer – AiMOGA Robotics

There are many humanoid robot companies around the world, but robots from Chinese companies are taking over the market. One of the latest examples comes from AiMOGA, which is working with local governments to deploy its lifelike “RoboCop” smart police unit R001. Equipped with six high-definition cameras, the robot can work alongside human traffic police during rush hours or assist when there is chaos on the streets or roads.

Another example is the Navigation Star One humanoid robot, whose sensors can be used as a tool to catch traffic offenders and even help pedestrians cross the road. Equipped with cameras and an intelligent voice system, this high-tech robot can even be paired with traffic lights to help guide traffic and reduce police costs. Similar to Smart Police R001, this robot is being tested in Chinese cities.

Between the EngineAI bots and these friendlier versions, it seems likely that China will choose them. While this push is important for refining the technology, there are currently no official plans to replace existing police forces, but it will certainly be interesting to see how these robots develop in the coming years.
