The New England Patriots are off to another slow start in the Super Bowl.
The Seattle Seahawks held the Patriots scoreless in the first quarter of Super Bowl X on Sunday afternoon at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. It’s worth noting how much this means for the Patriots’ brand heading into the Super Bowl.

The Patriots have only scored a total of three points in 10 Super Bowl games. The only field goal during this period came in Super Bowl LII, a 26-yard field goal by Stephen Gostkowski late in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2018, the Eagles won that game 41-33.
Beyond that, they’ve been completely shut out.
But incredibly, the Patriots weren’t defeated either. Since Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002, they have allowed just 27 points in those 10 quarters. It was longtime quarterback Tom Brady’s first win with the team.

Most importantly, the Patriots won six of those nine Super Bowls. Therefore, their success in the first quarter is by no means a measure of the outcome of the game.
But the Seahawks are a perfect 11-0 when scoring first time so far this season, including the playoffs. Starting in Week 16 of the regular season, they have scored first in six straight games. Jason Myers got his team on the board in the first quarter on Sunday night with a 33-yard field goal.
Only time will tell who will hoist the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night. But the Patriots’ trend, even now that the Brady dynasty is far behind the team, is alive and well in the Super Bowl.
