Interstate 79 in Butler County was closed for several hours Friday due to multiple crashes, one of which was fatal.

Most of the highway near Zelienople was closed in both directions from around 11am. The highway reopened around 4:20 p.m.
At 5 p.m., Channel 11 reporter Andrew Havranek explains how weather played a role in the accident.
State police said 25 vehicles were involved in the crash and 20 others were totaled. Nine people were taken to hospital at the scene and at least one person was reported dead.
Due to winter weather, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has implemented a 45 mph speed limit on northbound and southbound I-79 between Erie PA 5 and Butler I-79. The speed limit has since been lifted.
