Demolition begins at historic Las Vegas commercial center

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A decades-long saga in the historic commercial center moved forward as demolition crews began tearing down a building Monday.

“Tearing down this building now is a big step forward. It means we can’t go back,” said Clark County Commissioner Tik Segerblom. “My goal is to build an arts center.”

Commissioner Segerblom is excited to invest in the “blighted” area of East Sahara Avenue near Maryland Avenue with new attractions and amenities.

“Ideally, there would be concerts for up to 5,000 people once a week or two nights a week. Then the parking lot would become an event space,” he said.

Paula Sadler, who owns Harmony Nail Spa and has been operating the facility since 2004, said her concerns about the redevelopment were overdue.

“It all sounds great, but it sounds like it’s probably still a few years away,” Sadler said.

Sadler believes the redevelopment will attract more customers. However, she worries the move could have other negative impacts on local business owners.

“We’re all little moms and dads here,” she said. “If someone has to be displaced or relocated, something needs to be done to help them.”

8 News Now asked Commissioner Segerblom to comment on the business owners’ concerns.

“Nothing will be replaced immediately,” he replied. “If we do displace people, we will work with them. They will draw a lot of attention.”

Commissioner Segerblom will hold a town hall meeting for Commerce Center tenants in the Composers Room on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. to share an update.
