Police officer killed, another critically wounded in shooting at Georgia hotel

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — One police officer was killed and another seriously wounded in a shootout at a suburban Atlanta hotel on Sunday.

Gwinnett County police said in a statement that shots were fired early Sunday after two officers responded to a call reporting a fraud at a hotel in the Stone Mountain neighborhood, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta.

When officers arrived, they were met by a man who pulled a gun and shot two officers, police said. Police returned fire, injuring the suspect. One of the officers was killed and the other was hospitalized in critical but stable condition on Sunday, a police statement said.

The suspect was also being treated for a gunshot wound, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp said he expressed condolences for the deceased and prayed for the recovery of the second officer.

“This is the latest reminder of the dangers law enforcement faces every day, and we are grateful to everyone who puts themselves at risk to protect their fellow Georgians,” Kemp said on the social platform X.

Police did not immediately release any further information, including the names of the officers or suspects.

The shooting investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which typically handles police-involved shootings in Georgia.
