president Donald Trump On Wednesday, he made a serious gaffe during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, repeatedly confusing Iceland and Greenland.
The president mentioned Iceland four times in an awkward 90-second segment of his lengthy address to economic giants around the world, when he was clearly referring to Greenland – which he is trying to acquire.
“I’m helping Europe, I’m helping NATO, and they loved me until the last few days when I told them about Iceland,” Trump said of the NATO ally.
A minute later, Trump repeated his mistake — as part of an attack on NATO.
“I didn’t know they were here to support us,” Trump said. “I can tell you, they’re not serving us in Iceland. I mean, our stock market dropped for the first time yesterday because of Iceland. So Iceland has cost us a lot of money.”
This is the second time in as many days that Trump has made the same mistake. At a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, the president said, “Iceland, if there were no tariffs, they wouldn’t even talk to us about it. So we’ll see what happens.”
The president did make news on the topic of Greenland when he spoke in Switzerland. After repeatedly hesitating about using force to acquire Greenland, Trump made clear he would not do so.
