Mercedes’ long-serving chief designer John Irving has resigned from his role, the Formula 1 team has confirmed.
The Silver Arrows announced on Tuesday morning that Irving will leave his role as director of automotive design at the end of the 2026 season.

According to the team, Owen has decided to take a temporary leave of absence from F1 and assist with the transition to his successor before embarking on a gardening break later this year.
Owen joined Brackley in 2007 and was integral to Mercedes’ eight constructors’ championships (2014-21) and seven drivers’ titles (2014-20).

Owen, who previously worked as an aerodynamicist at Sauber, joined the team during his Honda days and stayed on as chief aerodynamicist for the 2009 Brawn GP race, which saw him win the championship.

When the team was acquired by Mercedes, the Briton was subsequently appointed chief designer, responsible for the design of each of the brand’s 17 F1 cars, including the 2026 W17.
Mercedes said: “We wish John all the best for the future and thank him for the important role he has played in the team’s success.
“John’s role will be filled through internal promotion. Giacomo Tortora (currently our engineering director) will become the team’s new car design director, with deputy technical director Simone Resta overseeing the team.”
