Kristi Noem Sputters After Tapper Rolls J6 Tape and Confronts Her On Whether Capitol Police Had Cause to Shoot

Kristi Noem Seems confused by CNN Jake Tapper Played audio recordings of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and confronted her about the “different standards” held by Capitol Police and ICE officers.

In the final moments of a tense marathon interview with CNN state of the union address On Sunday, Tapper played footage from Jan. 6 and compared it to the fatal shooting Renee Goode ICE agents in Minneapolis.

“Those were law enforcement officers who were physically assaulted,” Tapper said of the officers on Jan. 6. “By that standard, were those officers justified in shooting the people who caused them physical harm?”

Noem’s answer showed that she believed the Capitol Police were indeed justified in shooting the Jan. 6 rioters.

“Every situation is going to depend on the situation the officer finds himself in,” Noem said. “But they know that when people lay hands on them, when they use weapons on them, when they do physical harm to them, they have the authority to arrest those people.”

Tapper was quick to point out that President Donald Trump views the two situations very differently.

“The president pardoned all these people,” Tapper said of the Jan. 6 rioters.

Noem tried to insist there was no double standard.

“Every investigation is conducted with a thorough understanding of the situation on the ground,” Noem said. “One of the things President Trump has been very focused on is making sure that when we’re out there, we’re not cherry-picking which situations require enforcement of the law and which don’t. Every law has been enforced under the Trump administration, and the clarity of the law is correct. If people don’t like it, it’s up to these members of Congress and elected officials to change the law and make sure they have that debate and policy.”

Tapper was completely unconvinced.

“I just showed you videos of people attacking law enforcement officers,” Tapper said. “Indisputable evidence, indisputable evidence. I just said President Trump pardoned everyone. You said President Trump enforces all laws equally. That’s not true. If law enforcement officers are attacked by Trump supporters, they are attacked by a different standard. We just saw that.”

In response, Noem recused himself altogether.

“This individual, these incidents, and these investigations have to be conducted correctly based on every situation that occurs on the ground,” Noem said. “So what we’re doing today … the Department of Homeland Security, working with our law enforcement officials, is making sure that we’re targeting the worst-case scenarios and truthfully discussing each scenario and making sure that we’re bringing those perpetrators of violence to justice, bringing them to justice and making sure that they face the consequences of their crimes.”
