Four people were killed in a head-on crash in Collier County just after the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day on Thursday (Jan. 1).
The three-vehicle crash occurred about 12:27 a.m. on State Highway 82 west of Spiral Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP reports that a Kia Forte and a Kia Sedona were both traveling eastbound on State Highway 82. The Kia Sedona was ahead of the Kia Forte when the Kia Forte entered the westbound lane in an attempt to pass the Kia Sedona.
A Subaru Ascent with four passengers was traveling westbound.
According to reports, a Kia Forte and a Subaru Ascent collided head-on. The Kia Forte spun and eventually collided with the Kia Sedona.
The driver of the Kia Forte, a 30-year-old woman from Immokalee, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Subaru, a 51-year-old Fort Myers woman, and a passenger, a 25-year-old Fort Myers woman, were also pronounced dead at the scene.
FHP troopers said the other three passengers in the Subaru were an 85-year-old Fort Myers woman, a 51-year-old Fort Myers man and a 25-year-old Fort Myers man. They were both taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. The 85-year-old woman was pronounced dead at hospital.
The crash remains under investigation, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
