Harold Fanning Jr. was added to the Cleveland Browns’ injury report on Friday.

But shortly after it happened, the star rookie tight end told reporters he planned to play Sunday.

This is inconsistent with what happened on Saturday. That’s when the Browns promoted TE Sal Canella from the practice squad.

Without concerns about Fanning’s status, Cleveland wouldn’t have to upgrade at tight end.

David Njoku has been ruled out, but the Browns do have Blake Whitehart and Brenden Bates available.

Canela’s call-up appears to be directly related to Fanning, as the Browns typically do not have four agents on the field on game days.

The situation will likely come down to Sunday’s inactive report, which will be released about 90 minutes before the Browns and Steelers’ scheduled 1 p.m. kickoff.

Fanning has already set a Browns single-season rookie record for receptions. He is an important offensive player with Quinshon Judkins out.

But whether Fanning plays Sunday appears to be a last-minute decision.
