As KTSM 9 News previously reported, a truck hit other vehicles on I-10 East near Geronimo around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, then rolled off the highway and knocked down a large highway sign.

The truck then landed on Gateway East and caught fire, causing the road to be closed for several hours. As a result, three people were sent to the hospital, one with serious injuries and the other two with non-life-threatening injuries.

One of the victims suffered serious waist injuries, a closed head injury, soft tissue hematoma in the waist, and multiple abrasions. The victim’s family has started a GoFundMe to help treat his injuries. To access the GoFundMe, click here.

TxDOT plans to replace I-10 East signs after fire

TxDOT confirmed to KTSM that the overhead sign bridge damaged in the incident will be replaced. There is no estimated timetable for sign replacement as signs will need to be designed and areas for new installations will need to be evaluated.

Although TxDOT does not have an exact cost for such signs, similar-sized signs can cost between $250,000 and $350,000. According to TxDOT, if a driver is at fault, they/their insurance company will be responsible for the costs, including cleanup, guardrail repair, sign removal, traffic control and replacement.

El Paso police did not say whether Rubio would pay for the new signs.
