The Boston Red Sox added Alex Bregman as a free agent a year ago, and he’s proven to be a great leader and still retains his ability.

But when this offseason came, Bregman opted out of his contract.
This decision isn’t just about the Red Sox. He just feels like he can get a better deal in free agency this time around (and he’ll likely be proven right).
At this time, Bregman remains a free agent.
As far as anyone knew, the Red Sox were playing. Andrew Simon of MLB.com even called Boston the “perfect choice” for Bregman in a new article.
“Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow made it clear that the Red Sox are still looking for another significant addition to their roster even after acquiring first baseman Wilson Contreras on Monday,” Simon wrote. “That almost certainly means an infielder, possibly another free agent like Bichette, or a trade acquisition, maybe someone like Arizona’s Kettle Marte or St. Louis’ Brenden Donovan. But why not go with someone you already know is the right fit and established himself as a club leader upon arrival last season? Bregman’s overall numbers were strong, and the Red Sox saw the best version of him when he hit .299/.385/.553 By keeping Bregman at the hot corner before he suffered a right quadriceps injury in late May, Boston could also bolster the defense in the middle by keeping Marcelo Mayer at secondary.”

Bregman would definitely be a good match for Boston, which hasn’t considered filling third base in a different way this offseason.
If Bregman were to go elsewhere, the Red Sox would have to find an alternative.
But before that happens, Boston is expected to target Bregman in the hope he can return to action at Fenway Park.
