Crash knocks down freeway sign bridge, closes I-10 in Central El Paso

A rollover crash struck an overhead traffic sign Sunday night, closing a portion of Interstate 10 in central El Paso, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

El Paso police said in a media release that the crash occurred on eastbound Interstate 10 near Paisano Drive around 8:15 pm on Sunday, December 21, and that the two people were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

TxDOT highway cameras showed significant damage to highway signage and what appeared to be a vehicle running off the highway on Gateway East Boulevard.

The eastbound lanes of I-10 are closed as well as Gateway East Boulevard and Paisano Drive, as well as the U.S. 54 North and South ramps at Spaghetti Bowl, the transportation department reported.

TxDOT and contractor crews are working on damage to the overhead sign bridge, which is expected to remain closed until further notice. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and expect delays.
