Cowboys’ All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs to return from 8-game absence to face Chargers despite depleted playoff hopes

The Dallas Cowboys were nearly eliminated from the playoffs, but they’re not looking to make a comeback against the Los Angeles Chargers in the thick of the AFC playoff race. The Cowboys activated All-Pro cornerback Trayvon Diggs on Saturday as he has been sidelined since Week 7 with a concussion and knee injury.

Diggs has missed the past eight games, dropping the Cowboys to 6-7-1, essentially eliminating them from the playoffs.

They need to win their remaining three games and make the Eagles lose their remaining three games to win the NFC East and make the playoffs. But Diggs will return with the intention of playing Sunday and potentially finishing the season regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game between the Eagles and Washington Commanders. A win for Philadelphia would knock Dallas out of the playoffs.

Diggs will play alongside quarterback Dak Prescott, who said this week he intends to finish the season despite the Cowboys’ playoff hopes being slim. Both will take the field against a Chargers team with a 10-4 record as they seek to clinch a wild-card berth and have a strong chance of overtaking the 12-2 Denver Broncos for the AFC West title.

For Diggs, it will be a chance to end the season on the field after being hampered by injuries for the third straight season. Diggs was named a first-team All-Pro in 2021 and a Pro Bowl selection in 2022. But injuries, which limited him to just two games in 2023 and 11 games in 2024, have now caused him to miss at least eight games this season.

Diggs is one of the NFL’s top defensive playmakers when healthy, leading the league with 11 interceptions in 2021. He will be looking for his first interception of the season on Sunday against the Chargers.

In a corresponding move, the Cowboys placed cornerback DaRon Blandon on season-ending injured reserve with a foot injury that may ultimately require surgery.
