Amid Michigan rumors, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham signs contract extension with Sun Devils

Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham appears to be staying with the Sun Devils.

Dillingham agrees to contract extension with school after third season according to Multiple reports. The 35-year-old Dillingham was considered a top candidate for the vacant head coaching position at the University of Michigan after Sherron Moore was fired.

Arizona State finished 8-4 in 2025 despite quarterback Sam Leavitt missing five games. Leavitt, who could enter the transfer portal in January, has played in just seven games after becoming one of the Big 12’s breakout stars in 2024.

The Sun Devils are in the College Football Playoff after winning the Big 12 Conference a year ago. Leavitt threw for over 2,800 yards and Cam Skattebo, the fifth-place finisher in the 2024 Heisman Trophy voting, rushed for over 1,700 yards as ASU fell to Texas with an 11-3 record.

An ASU alumnus, Dillingham improved ASU to eight wins in his second season. ASU hasn’t won 11 games in a season since Jake Plummer led the Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl in 1996.

Before coming to ASU, Dillingham served as offensive coordinator at Auburn, Florida State and Oregon. Given the presence of five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, his offensive pedigree makes him an attractive candidate for many Michigan fans. The Michigan native started his freshman career in 2025 after choosing the Wolverines over LSU.

With Dillingham re-signed, it appears Michigan will need to expand its search for a head coach. Alabama coach Karen DeBoer has also been mentioned as a potential target, but DeBoer has publicly said he’s not going anywhere after Alabama advanced to the Rose Bowl with a 34-24 victory over Oklahoma State in the College Football Playoff on Friday night.

Michigan State is searching for a coach after firing Sherron Moore for cause last week. Moore was fired after evidence emerged that he had an inappropriate relationship with an employee and, after being fired, allegedly went to the employee’s home and was arrested hours later. Moore was charged with felony burglary and two misdemeanors and has a court date in January.

Moore served as Michigan’s offensive coordinator before taking over for Jim Harbaugh before the 2024 season. After Michigan won the national championship in 2023, the Wolverines won 17 games during Moore’s tenure.
